Psidium guajava

Growing in Phoenix: Guava is an excellent tropical tree choice for Phoenix. They grow to a size of 10-15 ft and make good nurse trees for more sun-sensitive tropicals. There are many varieties and in addition to the edible fruit, the leaves are used in tea for medicinal properties to treat stomach ailments, lower blood sugar, and wound healing. It is also used as a rinse for hair, the high level of vitamin B and C in the leaves is said to nourish the hair follicles. It is a fast-growing tree, that does well in full sun, and is not fussy. It is tolerant of a broad pH spectrum as long as it gets regular applications of chelated iron. Protect when temperatures are below 30 during the first winter. Suitable for container culture in a pot of 30 gallons or larger.

Thai White: A medium-sized fruit good for fresh eating, canning, or preserving. It is pale green on the exterior, smooth and round. The flesh is a creamy white, sweet with some tart flavor. The mature trunk on this variety is very ornamental. It is copper-colored and peels off in strips  revealing shades of pink and green. 

Taiwanese White: A heavy producing tree with light green fruit and creamy white flesh. The fruit is highly aromatic and juicy. This variety has few seeds and a crunchy texture. Dip in chili and sprinkle with salt. Bares two crops in a year. 

Indian White: This variety originates in Florida and is a popular commercial variety. The fruit is 2-3 inches in diameter, the flesh is soft and melting. It is a very sweet variety with no acid. A true guava flavor.

Vietnamese Queen: Pear-shaped fruits are green on the exterior with creamy-white flesh. It is less acidic than most guava varieties and has a rounded, mellow flavor. The texture is soft and grainy. Vietnamese Queen is a prolific producer, good for canning and preserves. 

Ruby Supreme: baseball-sized fruits turn a pale yellow when ripe. The interior is a lovely shade of creamy pink flesh that is highly aromatic and very sweet. This variety will fruit at least twice a year. 

Seedless Pink Guava: Seedless guavas range from round, ovoid, or piriform. This variety has a thin lime-green skin that is fully edible when ripe. They are medium-large guava sweeter than the seeded varieties. The flesh is a lovely pink color and very aromatic.  The crisp white flesh is highly aromatic and offers flavors of peach, passionfruit, lime zest, and rose.

Seedless White Guava: Seedless guavas range from round, ovoid, or piriform. This variety has a thin lime-green skin that is fully edible when ripe. They are medium-large guava sweeter than the seeded varieties. The crisp white flesh is highly aromatic and offers flavors of peach, passionfruit, lime, and roses.
