Growing in Phoenix: This is also known as the rain tree and is native to Central and South America. It is a species of flowering tree in the pea family, Fabaceae which means it is a nitrogen-fixing tree. It produces ornamental pink flowers followed by woody pods containing a sugar-sweet pulp that is edible. In Phoenix, they can take full sun but need cold protection below 40℉. They are not suitable for container-growing longer than 3-4 years. This is still an experimental tree in Phoenix, long term size and information is not yet known.
