Vitis rotundifolia
Growing in Phoenix: Muscadine grapes are native to the South Eastern and South Central United States. They are larger than conventional grapes with a thick skin and a very juicy sweet interior. The interior is much softer than conventional grapes and melts in the mouth. Muscadines are harvested around July and August. They are excellent for juice given their large size and juiciness. Muscadines can have a wet stem scar meaning that the fruit may teat when harvested. This reduces its shelf life. Therefore dry stem scar varieties are preferred as they store better.
They require a pH of 5.8-6.5. A hardy vine that does well in full sun. No winter protection is needed. Not suited for container growing long term.
See the planting and care guide page for planting and watering instructions.
Muscadine Carlos: Carlos is an extremely heavy producer of medium-sized, bronze grapes. It is a self-fertile variety and produces an abundance of quality grapes great for juice or wine. It is the number-one bronze juice or muscadine wine grape in the southeastern United States. The standard muscadine for white muscadine winemaking. A disease-resistant variety with a dry stem scar. A very vigorous vine; allow enough space to sprawl. Prune in the dormant period.
Muscadine Alachua: Alachua produces a medium-sized black grape. It is not patented. Vines are self-fertile, productive, and quite vigorous. It has good disease resistance and a strong muscadine flavor. An excellent variety for home growing. It has a dry stem scar. Prune in the dormant period.
Muscadine Delicious: A self-fertile variety of bronze-colored fruit that is sweet and medium-large in size. It is not a patented variety. This is an early ripening variety, having an excellent texture and flavor. It has a dry stem scar and is great for the home grower. Prune in the dormant period.
