Carissa marcocarpa
Growing in Phoenix: A hardy plant native to South Africa. Often used for a hedging plant or to fill garden beds with a hardy perennial shrub. Blooms small fragrant white flowers that will bare bright red fruit in the correct conditions. Except for the fruit, other parts of this plant shouldn’t be ingested. The fruit is called Carissa fruit in South Africa, used as a filling for chocolate cake. Equally as delicious eaten on its own. Loved by the birds.
Drought tolerant, however like all plants in Phoenix, it does much better with water. It will take full sun and does not need to be protected in winter.
