Carya illinoinensis
Growing in Phoenix: Pecan will grow best on a flood irrigated lot, however, if watering differently, they require long deep soaks frequently. See our care instructions for more details. It is a slow-growing tree, so purchase as large as possible. When fully mature, it is a lovely shade tree providing a bountiful crop of nuts. Older pecan trees are found throughout the Phoenix and surrounding areas. They take full sun and do not need winter protection. Not suitable for containers.

Choctaw Pecan
A large tree, that is slow-growing, great for shade once mature. Choctaw produced a thing hull large attractive nut. This variety has a high oil content and is grown for commercial harvesting. It has a sweet taste and crunchy texture, ready for picking in late fall.
Desirable
A large well filled nut that brings top price at markets. It is an excellent shelling variety, yielding many mammoth halves. The nuts grow in giant clusters are ripen earlier in the season around mid-October. A sweet, tasty variety with good oil content.
Candy
This is an old variety and derives its name from its intended use; namely sweet treats. An excellent all-around variety perfect for cooking or fresh eating. A highly productive tree with medium-sized nuts.
