Description
The white sapote is a superb but delicate fruit that tastes like a creamy sugar cube. The fruit is typically baseball- to softball-size, and the trees begin fruiting in just one to two years. They are best eaten fresh and chilled, but are excellent in ice cream and milkshakes as well. In Mexico, they have a reputation for having a soporific effect, and have come to be known as the “sleepy sapote.”
Casimiroa edulis
Growing in Phoenix: Sapote is native to Mexico and Central America. It is a medium to a large evergreen tree with glossy green hand-shaped leaves. Sapotes are best ripened on the tree, to the point there are almost overripe for the best flavor and texture. They have a mild, sweet tropical flavor and custard-like texture. Provide afternoon shade for at least the first summer. Protect below 30℉ during the first winter.
It can be container grown.
See the planting and care guide page for planting and watering instructions.
