Description
Spondias mombin
Growing in Phoenix: Hog Plum is related to cashews and grows well in Phoenix. It is native to the tropical Americas, including the West Indies. The tree’s bark has deep fissures, and its branches sprout compound leaves, which usually drop before a flowering. They have unique white flowers and fruits with large, hard pits. The flavor is sweet, sour, and a little tangy. The pulp is juicy with notes of musk. Young leaves and seeds are edible with medicinal value.
When young, protect below 40℉, as the tree matures it can take colder temperatures. Maintain a soil pH of around 6 and plant in well-draining soil. Suitable for container culture in a 15-gallon or larger pot.
See the planting and care guide page for planting and watering instructions.
